Today I have officially started prototyping my project.

I am aiming to create a prototype to enable me to see what is needed for the DVD and to give me an idea of how to go about creating my DVD and the workings around it and also how long it will take to produce the end product. In the prototype I also aim to see what skills and effects I can incorporate and what will work and what won't.

I also need to start shooting video of various interesting subjects for the game side of my DVD. This I will use premier to edit, and here trying to incorporate the cool effects if possible.

for the 20th century fox opening I plan to use 3DS Max, and hope that it will be to a good enough standard in the end. Maybe some maps will have to be made for this and some tutorials practiced.

obviously a design for my box etc will need to be thought of but as yet that is still in the pipe line...

I have come to the conclusion that an interactive DVD is the way forward for me. This is simply fulfilling my brief by acting as a place to play. On the DVD will hopefully be a game which is partially interactive. At this moment in time I have come up with the idea that the game could be a series of videos. The game would be produced from the content of the videos. For example, I would film a scene from a train and speed it up with Premier. I could also involve graphics which could make the video a lot more aesthetically pleasing for the viewer(s). To keep the viewer interested I would also have a sound track accompanying the footage. After the initial video has been shown, I would then, graphically ask the viewers to write down how many train stations were passed(for example)... After a period of time answers would be revealed and points awarded. However, these scores would have to be written down by the viewers. The same process would then be repeated but with different pieces of video until the game is complete.

At this moment in time I do not yet know how to have the videos randomly selected so the game is not the same each time the video is played. Also I could play the same video but ask how many trains we passed(for example) to lower the amount of videos I would have to film and to also give the viewer a surprise as they might think they know what I will ask.

My plan is to produce a logo and obviously design a front cover for the DVD box and probably print a logo onto the Disk itself. I also plan to produce a moving introduction logo like that of 20th Century Fox(still - shown below). This is instantly recognizable in the film industry and appears at the beginning of every film they sponsor or produce. This is the aim of my logo, to be shown on every DVD I would produce within that company.

Thinking about an audience for my piece, it will probably be aimed at anyone from the age of 8yrs to 88yrs. The only limitation of this DVD is if the user is unable to use a DVD Player or are blind.

Wow - my blog has actually achieved a hint of design. I must admit that these templates are actually pretty nifty. Anyway a step up in the world and more posts to submit, what more could I ask for...

Make a new game

Things brought in to play with where:

A compass – maybe used for measuring something, as a weapon or used to draw something.

A standard pack of cards – usual card games

A blackjack electronic game – a number generator

First idea

The cards are stuck onto a dart board (which has to be supplied by the player) and the electronic game chooses a number at random which the user has to hit by throwing the compass. The player with the most accurate throwing skill is the winner.

Second idea

The compass is used to create a target. The target has five rings, with the middle one giving the most points as the cards are multiplied to create points. If a bull’s eye is hit then the card is multiplied by 5 times its original value. Again the blackjack game is used to pick a random card which is the one the player throws on their go.

Third idea

The cards are laid face down on a table or floor and the idea is to remember where the cards are that your opponent has already picked up. The blackjack game is used to generate the number again and the player has to try and locate (by memory) where the combination is on the table/floor. If however a player does get the combination right, he/she is able to stab the other players with the compass. The player who bleeds first is the looser. This goes on until every player, but one is eliminated.

The advisory rating for this game is 8+ with the supervision of an adult.

In the box the following is included;
A compass
A blackjack electronic game
A standard pack of playing cards
A standard packet of plasters

A computer generated version of the game;

The game would be produced using Flash and would be available to play over the internet. The game could be part of a chat room and to invite people, you invite the people who you are chatting to.

On screen would be how ever many hands relating to the number of players. One hand for each person lay on a table. A compass in the middle of the table and the cards jumbled. Obviously the card generation would have to be on screen with a random output. When a player succeeds with choosing the correct cards, the compass is floated to him and he/she is able to stab the other contestants, only once. The graphics would be over the top with squirting blood out of the hands, this would mean that after so many stabbings, and then that player becomes eliminated until there is a winner.

Idea's

1. Interactive DVD - need to follow up on learning how produce one. This will probably be more of a game creating a place to play with a multiplying function.

2. A portal for a place to play - involving games I may have produced. This is separately a place to play and a multiplying gaming archive.

... More idea's and research needed.

The brief - 09/01/2006

Make yourself a place where you can play often.
You can invite others to play with you occasionally.

Welcome to my blog. I am currently studying Multimeida Design BA(Hons), at Huddersfield University. In my first year I have already marginally increased my presentation and project skills obtaining good marks and feedback for future briefs.

I will plan to update my blog on a regular basis to keep good track of my progress and for others to review it.
